Coragen® Registered for Control of Western Bean Cutworm (WBC)

Insecticide is powered by DuPont™ Rynaxypyr® and provides highly effective control of WBC and other target pests at low use rates.

Mississauga, Ontario – May 5, 2011 – Field, seed and sweet corn growers can now use DuPont™ Coragen® to help optimize yield and quality through reliable and consistent control of Western Bean Cutworm (WBC).

“Coragen® is an innovative product that protects corn quality and yield with long-lasting, broad-spectrum control of key pests,” says Sylvain Legault, senior sales representative, DuPont.

Coragen® is powered by Rynaxypyr®, an active ingredient from a new class of chemistry – Group 28, the diamides. It provides rapid cessation of feeding, residual activity and excellent rainfast properties. It delivers long-lasting plant protection of key pests, including WBC.

“Western Bean Cutworm is a pest that is relatively new to Ontario,” says Legault. “Last year there were some pockets in Ontario where damage was quite extensive. The registration for WBC comes just in time as this year’s late spring could make the corn crop more susceptible to WBC.”

WBC moths generally don’t like to lay eggs in corn that has already tasseled. This year’s later-planted crop may not tassle before WBC moths start laying eggs. Given the choice, moths also tend to lay eggs in shorter corn. “Later-planted sweet corn could be at an even higher risk if it is pre-tassel while the rest of the field corn crop is beyond that stage,” says Tracey Baute, field crops entomologist for OMAFRA.

Coragen® has long-lasting residual control and is classified as a reduced risk insecticide. It is also effective against a number of other key insects in corn, including European corn borer and corn earworm.

Coragen® is also easy on beneficial insects, including honeybees. Coragen® has a negligible impact on key biological control agents – parasitoids and predators – and pollinators, at field-use rates. This selectivity, along with its robust control and environmental profile, makes Coragen® an excellent tool for integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

In addition to field, seed and sweet corn, Coragen® is also registered for insect control on a wide range of vegetable crops, potato and alfalfa.
