DuPont & Thompsons Ltd: Traceability for Food Grade Soybeans
Ontario growers can use data to improve quality and productivity.
Mississauga, Ontario – February 9, 2011 – DuPont Crop Protection and Thompsons Limited are collaborating to deliver new web-based traceability tools that will help food grade soybean processors with the often onerous documentation of field practices. These new tools will be easy for growers to use and provide better data to both growers and soy food manufacturers.
The food grade soybean business is an important one to Ontario growers, accounting for approximately 35 percent of soybean acres in Eastern Canada. Food grade soybeans grown under IP contracts usually earn a premium for growers. In order to maximize their potential, growers need simple tools that can help them improve their productivity and quality. Participating growers will now be able to implement more documented quality practices and access aggregate result feedback reports that will provide them with additional insight into evolving best practices.
“As agriculture technologies are becoming more complex with various traits, pest management technologies and increasing quality expectations, our customers require better traceability and quality systems,” said Brad Chandler, Food Products Manager at Thompsons. “Quality management is a key differentiator in enabling new markets where on farm best practices and transparency of these practices is ever more important. Thompsons is very pleased that our focus on quality and documentation of on-farm practices is delivering new business opportunities to our growers.”
The offering is another element of the DuPont™ SmoothTrade™ initiative, a program created to help growers who export produce meet increasing demands for quality and traceability around the world.
“DuPont has been working across the value chain with key food processors and retailers to improve crop quality with implementation of on farm best practices, and we are a proud member of the GlobalGAP On-Farm Certification process,” said Jean-Pierre Claude, Global Lead for DuPont™ SmoothTrade™. “The GlobalGAP standards have guided our work with Thompsons.”
Thompsons is enthusiastic that this opportunity will build the base to strengthen its offering to other customers. This enhanced traceability program provides a very good strategic fit with Thompsons’ Laresco affiliate, which offers data management services to growers such as field mapping, field scouting and soil sampling, all of which can be integrated into a traceability program based upon end-user needs.
Thompsons has started to contract additional acres for this program in 2011 and welcomes inquiries from interested growers. For more information, contact your local Thompsons Branch.
