Coragen® Insecticide is Easy on Bees & Beneficials

Coragen® is easy on beneficials

Crop protection products are necessary for sustainable food production. They protect your crop from food-destroying pests. However, as a grower you also want to ensure the products you use have as little impact on beneficial insects as possible.

Beneficial insects pollinate crops

“Many crops require pollination, so we must continue to develop ways to have pollinators stay healthy but manage pests as well,” says Dr. Cynthia Scott-Dupree, a professor in the School of Environmental Science at University of Guelph, who researches the effects of pesticides on bees and other “good” insects. The annual economic value of honeybees alone in pollinating Canadian crops is estimated to be approximately $1.5 billion.

To minimize potential negative impacts on beneficial non-target insects when using pesticides, farmers should always read and follow label directions and observe other precautions. These include reducing spray drift by avoiding application on windy days, and avoiding application during the day when bees are foraging. Keep good communications open with neighbours about spraying, and select products that are less toxic to bees.

DuPont™ Coragen® -- Easy on beneficials

Extensive multi-year laboratory and greenhouse studies conducted by Dr. Cynthia Scott-Dupree show that Coragen® has a negligible impact on key biological control agents – parasitoids and predators – and pollinators, at field-use rates.

Coragen® is an insecticide in a new chemical class (Group 28, the diamides) which is used to control tough insects like Colorado potato beetle and European corn borer.  It is classified as a reduced risk product, so it’s easy on beneficials and bees when used according to label directions.
