Electrical Plastics For Housings, Enclosures, Sockets & Switches
The electrical and electronic industries have a very unique set of demands, which means that materials suppliers must offer multiple grades coupled to extensive research and development capabilities.
DuPont offers a range of engineering polymers with grades developed specifically to address these demanding needs, offering solutions for a wide variety of electrical and electronic applications.
Applications such as electrical and electronic housings, enclosures, sockets, switches and wiring components can leverage the strong and extensive research and development efforts that DuPont has committed to its DuPont™ Zytel®, DuPont™ Crastin®, DuPont™ Rynite® and DuPont™ Delrin® engineering polymers.
DuPont ™ Zytel® PA6 and PA66 FR (flame retardant) come from an incredibly versatile plastic, which is easy to process, easy to modify to meet specific needs, while being environmentally responsible in production and in reuse. It's tough, light and resilient in hot, chemically aggressive and humid environments, making it an excellent choice for an electrical plastic.
Zytel® PA66 FR is available in both halogenated and non-halogen versions; with the non-halogen version using a patented combination of flame-retardant copolymer and stabilizer to improve melt stability, flow and surface appearance and reduce mold deposit.
DuPont™ Zytel® HTN high-performance polyamide resin provides excellent flow and dimensional stability, to help make it possible and cost-efficient to produce thinner and lighter components for the latest generation of electrical and electronic devices. Zytel® HTN offers the necessary performance characteristics to contain electronic connectors, relays, light-emitting diode components and various other electrical parts.
Zytel® HTN is also available in halogen-free, flame-retardant grades in compliance with recycling programs for discarded electronic products. It can also withstand high-temperature circuit assembly methods, including those using lead-free solder.
Crastin® PBT thermoplastic polyester resins can be extensively modified to make them suitable for an enormous variety of electrical and electronic applications. Variants include flame retardant, glass-reinforced and hydrolysis resistant versions. Crastin® PBT grades offer stiffness, toughness, heat resistance, friction and wear resistance, excellent surface finishes and good colorability. They have excellent electrical insulation characteristics, with high-arc-resistant grades being available.
Glass reinforced Rynite® PET offers stiffness, temperature performance, maximum dimensional stability and a high gloss finish. It combines the best properties of reinforced polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with easier processability to produce high performance parts that can be molded conventionally. Rynite® also offers low water absorption, helping electrical and electronic parts to maintain their properties and dimensional stability.
Delrin® acetal bridges the gap between metals and ordinary plastics with a unique combination of creep resistance, strength, stiffness, hardness, dimensional stability, toughness, fatigue resistance, solvent and fuel resistance, abrasion resistance, low wear and low friction. Available in multiple grades to suit a wide variety of applications, Delrin® variants include low emission, high tensile and impact strength and excellent creep and fatigue resistance.
DuPont is also working on renewably sourced variants of many of its engineering plastics helping electrical and electronic companies address stringent sustainability legislation. In addition DuPont is also constantly evolving its range of halogen-free products and is working on the development of halogen-free Crastin® and Rynite® both of which are being developed to address industry requirements for electrical materials.
In addition to the in-service performance of its engineering polymers, DuPont is also working on the processability of its many materials, giving designers greater flexibility and the chance to specify smaller parts, smaller production runs, higher tolerances and greater product variety all leading to a faster time to market and reduced costs.
