When a deaf colleague joined the logistics team at our Asturias, Spain, site, it was an adjustment for all parties. After a few months of working together, several colleagues decided to learn Spanish Sign Language to improve communication not only on their logistics team, but throughout the entire site.

In June 2019, on-site Spanish Sign Language courses began with a full class of about 25 colleagues from different teams throughout the site. They meet with an external interpreter twice a week at lunchtime to learn sign language theory, practice signing and gain insights into the cultural aspects and life experiences of the deaf community. Through their efforts and commitment, they have almost eliminated the communication barriers that once existed.

Colleagues in Asturias now celebrate Spanish National Sign Language Day and incorporate Spanish Sign Language into on-site employee engagement activities and cultural events. These teams are truly embracing our Respect for People core value by creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
