Sepsis continues to be a leading cause of newborn deaths globally, and infants in developing countries are disproportionately impacted. Altogether, nearly three million newborns and 1.2 million additional children suffer from sepsis every year, according to the World Health Organization, yet there’s no consensus on how to prevent sepsis effectively.
The Centre for Global Child Health at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto has selected DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences to provide probiotics and prebiotics (fiber) for a new, large-scale research study focusing on the microbiome and severe infections in infants in Bangladesh. Funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the research will be conducted in collaboration with the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research and the Child Health Research Foundation, both based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
DuPont scientists will offer their expertise to help determine whether a precise probiotic-prebiotic combination can effectively colonize an infant’s developing microbiome, reduce the incidence of sepsis, and improving other health outcomes in early life.
