Egypt faces daunting water scarcity challenges. The country records only about one inch of total rainfall each year, less than 1,000 m3 of fresh water annually per inhabitant. With the Egyptian population set to reach 115 million by 2025, Egypt will need innovations to secure enough water supplies to support such growth.
DuPont Water Solutions worked with the Suez Governorate in northeast Egypt to produce safe, high-quality drinking water for the 60,000 inhabitants in its four towns. To deliver water without the heavy addition of treatment chemicals, DuPont partnered with Integrated Environmental Technology and Oil Services Company S.A.E (IETOS) to design a decentralized ultrafiltration treatment plant.
Built from pre-engineered and pre-assembled IntegraPac™ ultrafiltration units, the new compact, modular plant is one-third the size of the previous facility. The plant also requires fewer parts and materials and was designed for a simplified installation process that takes only three months to complete. Thanks to its containerized design, the treatment plant can be extended with further modules to meet rising demand, or even moved to other areas if needed.
IntegraPac™ ultrafiltration technology uses our latest XP fibers, which provide up to 35% higher permeability, increasing facility productivity. The current capacity of 5,000 m3 per day can be expanded by up to 25% without any further mechanical or electrical work, simply by adding more modules to the bays. The plant is the first of four containerized ultrafiltration water treatment installations that we’re planning to construct in the region.
Decentralized water systems like this one will have increasing importance in the years ahead, not only in remote locations but also in cities, thanks to the increasing number of municipalities that are requiring industries and residential buildings to reuse some or all of the water they consume.

Specialized sensors housed in a fabric band that sits around the mother's abdomen track fetal heart rate and kick count, sending real-time data to a smartphone.
The agreement, supported by an initial investment of more than one million euros mainly made by DuPont, exemplifies the concept of circular economy and will lead to significant reductions in energy, water and transport consumption for both companies.
