DowDuPont specialty products division announces opening of manufacturing facility in Idaho, producing advanced materials for building industry

Completion of this new Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation facility exemplifies commitment to better serving Western United States and Canadian building industry and improves ability to provide more sustainable solutions for North American customers.

MIDLAND, Mich - August 03, 2018 - Today, the Specialty Products Division of DowDuPont celebrated the opening of a new manufacturing facility located in Burley, Idaho. The new Idaho-based facility will produce STYROFOAM™ Brand XPS Insulation products with BLUEDGE™ Polymeric Flame Retardant Technology. The development of this new facility has been a collaborative effort between the company, the state of Idaho, the city of Burley, the Burley Development Authority, Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization and other local entities.

STYROFOAM™ Brand XPS Insulation has played a key role in the building and construction industry for over 75 years, providing energy efficiency through a more sustainable insulation solution for the entire building envelope. It has a rich heritage and proven insulating performance to meet thermal, moisture, air and vapor performance requirements through its rigid foam board technology. Over its lifetime, STYROFOAM™ can help save more than 30 times the energy embodied in it.

BLUEDGE™ Polymeric Flame Retardant Technology is a leading-edge flame retardant alternative that was launched in 2011 and serves as an alternative for hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a common flame retardant with a less favorable environmental profile.

This new XPS Insulation facility clearly demonstrates the company’s promise to offer energy efficient insulation solutions that enhance sustainability performance to its customer base, while also improving its ability to serve and provide Western United States and Canadian markets with approximately 100 variations of STYROFOAM™ insulation.

“The successful completion of this new XPS Insulation facility will enable us to better serve and respond to consumer building needs by offering safer, more sustainable solutions that can be sourced closer to their buying locations,” said Tim Lacey, global business director for Performance Building Solutions at DowDuPont Specialty Products Division. “The city of Burley, and numerous local government faculty and facilities, have played an integral role during facility development, and we are thrilled to continue growing our partnership as we move forward.”

“This newly constructed plant undoubtedly exemplifies the mounting demand created by the building industry,” said Rose Lee, president of Safety and Construction at DowDuPont Specialty Products Division. “Our unique ability to improve the building envelope, and the systems approach we’re able to take with our combined portfolio and expertise, will drive better building capabilities in the future and positively impacting people’s lives.”

“This advanced facility in Burley is a strong indicator that our local workforce is at the forefront of generating economic opportunities for the entire state of Idaho,” said Steve Ormond, mayor of the city of Burley. “Today, our city warmly welcomes a trusted corporate partner to our region, and it is an immense pleasure to work alongside a building and sustainability pioneer such as DowDuPont. We are elated about the business impact that lies ahead for our rapidly evolving city, communities and state.”

This newly completed 60,000 square foot plant held its groundbreaking ceremony in 2016. Pulling predominantly from the southern Idaho and Magic Valley region, this project employed over 120 workers during construction and it has created 25 full-time jobs including manufacturing and operator roles.
