Kevlar® Dare Bigger™ Moments: Body Armor through the Ages at Milipol, Paris
During the Milipol exhibition in Paris last November, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Kevlar®, showcasing the evolution of body armor through the ages.
The show started with the depiction of the Middle-Ages, when knights would wear either rigid-hinged or more flexible 'chain mail' type armor, which were heavy, restrictive with movement, and very expensive.
Flexible body armor started to be worn during World War 2, with bulky flak jackets being adopted, and made out of nylon. Unfortunately these were not only cumbersome to wear, they were also of limited value; providing some protection but no real effective protection against bullets.
By 1965, things finally started to change with the discovery of Kevlar®, a breakthrough new synthetic fiber, which was extremely strong and lightweight. Intensive research in the first half of the 1970s saw Kevlar® adapted to be used in the manufacture of a totally new type of wearable ballistic vests.
Kevlar® has stayed ahead through continuous innovation, with next generation of innovations made with Kevlar® - DuPont™ Kevlar® AS450X and DuPont™ Kevlar® XP™S104 - demonstrating the company’s ability to extend its range of protective solutions for the military, police and security market.
Invented 50 years ago, DuPont™ Kevlar® continues to take on new challenges, with DuPont scientists continuously innovating and working on a range of new products with customers and licensees worldwide.
We are taking the strength, durability and performance of Kevlar® to new frontiers. Kevlar® aramid fiber is pushing boundaries and defying obstacles every day. Kevlar® is allowing everyone to Dare Bigger™.
