Tyvek® Enhances Sustainability

Tyvek®—A Sustainable Solution for Healthcare Packaging

Scalable sustainability in healthcare packaging is a core goal for DuPont. As an organization, we are committed to resource conservation, integrated conservation and waste management.

We put that commitment into action as a founding member of the Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC), a technical coalition that is working to enable sustainable, cost-effective recycling solutions for plastic products and materials used in the delivery of healthcare.

And every day, around the world, DuPont™ Tyvek®—a standard of excellence in medical and pharmaceutical packaging—plays a key role in enhancing sustainability efforts by:

Supporting Recycling

Tyvek® is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and can be recycled where appropriate recycling programs (or facilities) exist. Tyvek® often gains a second life in products such as plastic decking and lawn furniture.

Reducing Materials Use

Tyvek® provides strength and durability in relatively light weights for medical device packaging. This supports sustainability by allowing heavy, uniquely shaped or sharp-edged medical devices to be protected using less material.

Reducing Waste

Due to its superior tear strength and puncture resistance, Tyvek® helps protect package integrity from both product breakthrough inside and rough handling outside. By helping to maintain sterile delivery of medical devices to the point of use, Tyvek® helps reduce waste.

Reducing Fuel Use

Tyvek® can enable packaging designs that weigh less or take up less space, helping to lessen the environmental impact of transporting products from manufacturer to distributor to healthcare provider.

Supporting Incineration

Tyvek® can be safely incinerated and, under optimal conditions, can lead to the release of only water and carbon dioxide, leaving no residue. In fact, it can even be used as fuel, yielding more than twice the energy value of coal, and as much energy as oil, in terms of BTU rating.

Supporting Safe Disposal

Because Tyvek® is a high-value recyclable material, DuPont encourages recycling. However, if landfilling is necessary, Tyvek® is an inert material, and will not leach harmful compounds into groundwater.
