Present Use

The company that historically was known as E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. has gone through significant changes in recent years. Among other things, its performance chemicals business that previously worked with PFOA became a separate, fully independent company called The Chemours Company in 2015.  In December 2015, Dow and historical DuPont announced a merger with subsequent plans to separate into three companies: Dow, new DuPont and Corteva Agriscience ™. That separation was completed in June 2019. 

The new DuPont is a specialty products company that is working with customers and industry leaders in safety, healthcare, nutrition, electronics, transportation, and construction—offering game-changing, innovative solutions to address some of the biggest challenges facing the world today. 

Across our portfolio, the new DuPont’s use of PFAS is a small fraction of the total PFAS used in the world and consists of the following:  

• As part of the DowDuPont merger, the new DuPont acquired a heritage Dow business that continued to use a small amount PFOS and PFOA granted through an EPA exemption. 
  
  
• The new DuPont, like many other industries, uses other less bio-persistent, short-chain PFAS in the manufacture of some of our products. We also use firefighting foam that contains PFAS at some of our sites, as is the industry standard for fire safety. 

DuPont is committed to being a responsible partner in addressing concerns about the health and environmental impacts of PFOA. The knowledge base around PFOA and other PFAS environmental footprint and health effects continues to evolve through work led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other health and environmental organizations around the world. We’re committed to working with regulatory bodies and agencies to support their efforts to develop science-based guidelines.
