Improving processes to reduce hazardous waste
Our Electronics & Industrials plant at Dayton, Ohio, USA produces electronic polymers that are used to manufacture light-sensitive materials. As is customary in the industry when producing this type of high-performance conductive material, we use acetone-based solvents to clean our production equipment between production batches. After cleaning the equipment, the cleanout solvent is disposed as hazardous waste.
In an effort to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals on site, the process engineering team conducted a review in 2020 to identify any unnecessary or redundant processes that could be eliminated. By reducing the number of equipment solvent cleanouts, the site reduced hazardous waste by 26,000 kg annually.
In 2021, E&I Dayton will conduct further reviews of our processes to identify more ways to reduce waste.
