Upcycling nylon for new uses
DuPont offers a broad portfolio of high-performance, nylon resin materials used in everything from hybrid and electric vehicles to consumer electronics, solar panels, and so much more. These resin materials are available in a range of grades so that customers can select the precise texture and quality resin with the most appropriate properties for each specific project or application.
As with many manufacturing operations, when production is starting up or when the equipment is changing over from one product grade to the next, the machinery can produce some interim material that may not meet the specifications of one of the final products we normally sell. However, this material still has inherent performance characteristics that can be unlocked when properly processed and connected to new applications.
A collaboration project between DuPont Mobility & Materials and Second Life Materials (2LM) was able to extract more value for this interim extruded nylon material, both for us and for our customers. By successfully grinding the material into smaller-sized granules, it can be diverted from landfill and used instead for injection mold applications in a variety of markets.
