In extreme heat: Nomex®
Ever wondered how a firefighter can face the dangers of a burning building? Or how race car drivers and their pit crews survive an explosion? For over 50 years, DuPont™ Nomex® fiber has been incorporated into protective clothing to do exactly that. Lightweight and comfortable, it’s also used by people working on off-shore oil rigs, in electrical utilities, petro-chemical industries, military, and police.

Scientific protection
The heat- and flame-resistant properties are engineered into the molecular structure of the fiber, i.e., they are inherent and permanent.
Technically speaking
Nomex® is a synthetic aromatic polyamide polymer, or aramid for short. It’s a man-made material with ring-like molecules that are bound together in long, very strong fibers.
The way it works
Thanks to its molecular structure, it can’t melt, drip or combust. When exposed to heat, a special reaction takes place to absorb the energy of the heat in the fabric.
Medically critical: Tyvek®
At some point in our lives, we’ve all benefited from having 100% sterile medical devices used on us. We take for granted that the tools in hospitals or doctors’ offices are safe and free of harmful bacteria. It’s the scalpels used in surgery, the implants put in our bodies, and everything in between. The brand of packaging most commonly used to keep critical medical devices sterile until the moment they’re needed is DuPontTM Tyvek®. In fact, 80% of hip and knee implants in the U.S. and Europe come packaged in Tyvek®.
